Elgin watches were originally made as extremely
expensive toys for the well to do, but quickly became an item
of great demand. A watch massed produced made in the early
1900’s, they continue to be sold and used today! Now
that’s longevity for you!
The history of the Elgin watch company begins in the little
town of Elgin, Illinois. In the year 1910, the company produced
it’s first wristwatch. At this time in history, most
watch producers had not reached the point of wristwatch production.
Originally called the “National Watch Company”,
the name was changed to the “Elgin National Watch Company”
in 1874. The team at Elgin took advantage of the open market
and mass-produced over 60 million pieces by the 1960’s.
Elgin designers and engineers saw that there was a rather
large need for watches and parts that could be quickly and
easily repaired. Unlike most other producers of that era,
the watches did not require intricate hand adjusting. The
Elgin National Watch Company produced jeweled pocket watches
as well as the wristwatches.
